The Coaching Habit by Michael Bungay Stanier
JACK’S TAKE
This is hands down the most accessible book for either: (1) becoming a better coach; (2) running better 1:1 meetings in your organisation. Why? Because the concepts are so simple, so well explained, and well, so obvious (once you’ve read them!).
If you haven’t heard of Michael Bungay Stanier, I recommend you watch his now infamous TED Talk which I’ve put on the page below.
KEY IDEAS
Michael Bungay Stanier has a great seven question framework which you can use in your next 1:1 or coaching session:
What’s on your mind?
And what else (is on your mind)?
What’s the real challenge here for you?
What do you want?
How can I help?
If you’re saying yes to this, what are you saying no to?
What was most useful for you?
It’s critical that when using this question framework, you keep a coaching mindset:
Remain curious about what they have to say.
Listen.
Curb your advice monster tendencies.
I recommend you take the seven questions into your next 1:1 - if it feels awkward, just tell your team that you’re practicing a new coaching habit! Trust me, they will love it.
