PAT’S TAKE

I used to see the obstacles I inevitably encountered in pursuit of my goals as unnecessary interruptions. Reading this book completely shifted my perspective.

I now see obstacles as opportunities to learn and grow. I love Ryan Holiday’s writing style and all his Stoicism books, but this one might just be my favourite!

What it's about

The Obstacle is the Way examines some of history’s greatest achievers - from Marcus Aurelius to modern leaders - and shows how they reframed adversity to their advantage.

Holiday breaks the process into three steps: perception, action, and will. By seeing obstacles as opportunities for growth (perspective), focusing on what we can control (action) and cultivating resilience (will), we can turn any difficulty into an opportunity. Full of inspiring real-life stories from history, this book leaves you empowered to overcome any challenge you will face on your journey.

KEY IDEAS

Perception is everything. How we see the obstacles we face determines whether they hold us back or push us forward. It starts with perspective: how we choose to interpret the world around us.

Action turns obstacles into momentum. Small, deliberate steps in the right direction transform challenges into progress. Momentum comes from doing in the face of adversity, not waiting for perfect conditions.

Resilience is your superpower. Persistence, discipline, and the ability to endure what you cannot control let you keep moving forward. Like any skill, resilience can be trained and strengthened over time.

The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.
