Why Failure Is The Path To Success
WHY YOU SHOULD LISTEN:
Ever wondered how the president of one of the world's biggest companies actually builds his teams and handles uncertainty? This is that conversation.
PAT’S TAKE
As an entrepreneur and co-founder, I found this one fascinating - a real window into how one of the best in the game thinks and operates, personally and professionally. Building Wildest Dream with Jack, I've found the uncertainty of entrepreneurship tough at times, especially coming from a structured corporate world. So it was refreshing to hear Harley Finkelstein admit that even the best entrepreneurs are "still figuring it out."
I also loved his approach to building teams around strengths, not well-roundedness - a philosophy Jack and I share, and one our clients adopt too. He doesn't look for people who are good at everything. He looks for people who are exceptional at a few things, then builds a team where each person owns their lane.
KEY IDEAS
① Confidence isn't knowing what's going to happen. It's knowing that whatever does happen, you'll figure it out.
② Build a spikey team, not a well-rounded one. You want individuals who are exceptional in a few areas, not generalists - the team becomes well-rounded, not each person.
③ The barriers to starting a business have never been lower. This is the most generative moment in history to build something, with the tools of commerce now open to anyone with an idea and the will to start.
④ The way you do anything is the way you do everything. Intentionality has to show up everywhere, not just at work. Show up for your relationships the way you show up for your role.
