Jimmy Carr On The Hidden Cost Of Success And What Really Matters
WHY YOU SHOULD LISTEN:
If you want to be inspired by a male role model who has spent his life embracing risks and challenge.
JACK’S TAKE
It might sound weird that one of my favourite podcasts ever is with a comedian, but it is! Yes, there are a few funny bits, but for the most part, you will be listening to one of the most prepared podcast guests ever. He explores what I consider to be some of the most important topics of our time:
What does it mean to be a man?
Why should we search for challenge and risk?
What does it mean to know who you are?
Jimmy comes across as an incredibly smart, well read and philosophical man - the type of man who is a role model to our younger generations.
KEY IDEAS
① When you embrace challenge, you have to accept that you’re going to fail more - comedy is ground zero for failure, you tell a joke and it is abundantly clear if it was good or not through the audience’s laughter.
② Gratitude is the mother of all virtues. One way to access it: ask yourself what your 80-year-old self would give to have your health, energy, and time back. The answer tends to make the present feel a lot more precious.
③ Happiness is quality of life minus envy. Most unhappiness isn't caused by what we lack, it's caused by noticing what someone else has. Remove the comparison, and the life you already have often turns out to be more than enough.
④ You can’t have an easy life and a good character: having stuff isn’t fun, getting stuff is fun. That’s why you really need to set yourself a challenge.
⑤ You should have imposter syndrome every 18 months: it’s okay to have an easy life, but if you want to achieve something great, you need to periodically push yourself to the point that you feel imposter syndrome.
